Big in Japan: Schoolgirl Street Fashion

Uniform Behavior – I was mesmerized by the variety of schoolgirl uniforms wandering the Harajuku district, an area that’s popular for class trips, I’m told. It’s cute to see how the girls would set themselves apart within their groups, style wise, usually with ornate backpacks (I spotted a lot of Jansport patterns) and stuffed animals. If I had to be stuck with a uniform, I’d hope for the blue one above. You can see some of my shopping faves listed below…

Travel Tips for Harajuku: Take the Yamanote train to Harajuku station and the main exit leads you to Takeshita Dori. It’s a fun alley for sightseeing, a fun dollar store and stores with kitschy things. If you cross the main street behind them to the next alley, look for G2 Vintage and the B-side sticker store (thanks, Ben). If higher end is your gig, at the end of that 2nd alley, turn right and find stores like Marc by Marc Jacobs, which has the most incredible canvas totes right now. I’ll take the lipstick red version, please.
