A Killer Exit - DJ Mia Moretti made one of the more memorable exits (with stylist Logan Horne) after Prabal Gurung’s show at the onset of New York Fashion Week. I’m not sure if she tires of being called an “it girl,” but I’ve been smitten with her style since I shot her at a Kitson LA event. I had to know who she was wearing and her Fashion Week survival tips – and she shared her deets via email.
Mia offered, “I was wearing a Prabal Gurung blouse & sweater, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti skirt, Isabel Marant jacket and boots with Fenton bracelets. The sunglasses are Super.” Her Fashion Week tip was grounded advice with, “Wear a piece or two you know you love, even if it’s something you’ve had for ages. It’s always nice to mix your own personal touches in.”
You can go to Mia’s website, click download and enter your email addy in exchange for a 33:43 minute mix and she also tumbles. You can click here to catch Logan’s recent Super Bowl Photo Diary.
Hip to be Square – I spotted Brandon Lee, all buttoned up in Soho and just had to get the scoop. The bag is his own line, The Park After Dark, that he’s working on as we speak. He says he started making laptop bags for himself last year and people would stop him on the street, so he decided to do something about his passion for fashion. His background is in music, but I’ll get to that after I tell you what he’s wearing.
Ben’s sporting a Topshop blazer, an old argyle sweater (that he thinks is probably Fink), and a G-Star Raw shirt, sealed with a vintage tie. His corduroys are from Soho’s Scotch & Soda and the shoes are Cole Haan oxfords.
If you follow indie music, you might recognize Brandon from Phoenix-based band Chronic Future (currently on hiatus), but in fun news – he recently joined Miniature Tigers. Look for their album, Mia Pharoah, dropping on March 6 on Modern Art Records (a label Brandon co-founded).
On Holiday from Holland – I spotted Lauren Zweegers in Nolita, just sitting there looking stylish in front of McNally Jackson, my favorite magazine shop, er, indie bookstore. She’s visiting from Holland and describes her style as classic meets street. She’s wearing a coat she got on London’s Portobello Road, Cheap Monday jeans, a Belgian shirt, Prada bag, James Dean eyewear and a Borsolino hat. (Clearly, she scored some good haul in those little brown bags). Lauren’s a singer/songwriter and you can give a listen to her catchy tune “Game” below [warning: volume down at work for language].
Jazz Hands – I spotted this spirited girl during an LA Fashion’s Night Out event at Anya Hindmarch. It wasn’t until we were outside taking streetstyle shots that I realized this was teen singer, Canadian Nikki Yanofsky who you might’ve seen perform at this little event called the 2010 Winter Olympics. Calling her crazy adorable would be an understatement and I was shocked that this petite teen has such powerful pipes. Nikki’s one to watch and you can follow her on twitter and facebook.
StyleSpotting - I can tell you that her heart shaped Gucci belt reminds her of Wonder Woman and that she’s wearing Hudson jean shorts, but – check out RACKED LA for the streetstyle shot, outfit details and to V O T E on her look.
Trending: Falling Whistles – I spotted Devon Culiner - HELL & LULA guitarist – at a Pop Up Shop event a few months ago at Satine and was touched to learn that his band supported Falling Whistles – A Campaign for Peace in the Congo. I’ve since noticed that the non-profit has set up shop in the same building as Unique LA. Hmmm, I predict a groundswell of young influentials beating the street for this cause. You can learn the symbolism of these falling whistles and purchase a few different styles on the campaign’s website.
Devon’s HELL & LULA bandmates are Michael Alan Kolb and Russell Henson and they’re signed to Hype, MTV’s label slash incubator for emerging artists.
The Head and the Heart – I found myself at LA art gallery Blum & Poe for an event in April and was floored by Seattle sextet The Head and the Heart, my new favorite band. I was standing in front of a speaker, literally hypnotized by the luxe harmonies of what seemed to be a trio of lead singers. The folk/indie pop band was playing the following Monday at LA’s historic Troubadour and I got to shoot Charity right before the band’s soundcheck. More on Charity’s style, their tour opening for Death Cab for Cutie and how to score free downloads after the jump. [click to continue…]
Blue Chip – In honor of the MTV Movie Awards tonight, I thought I’d feature 20-year old music artist Colette Carr who has a new single out, (We Do It) Primo and you can watch her video after the jump. Colette’s a colorful artist who was discovered at a concert for the Game, where she was in the audience and volunteered to go up and freestyle before his show. The Malibu girl was instantly hooked and apparently so was Nick Cannon, who claims the eccentric singer is “what the music industry is missing” in this episode of her webseries “Life in the Day.” Cannon signed her to his label and her first mixtape was released last year. She seems to enjoy a significant cult following and I think she’s going to blow up. I shot her at a past Fred Segal event and her look is only a tad more subtle now, but she’s in no danger of blending in. Meet Colette Carr in the VIDEO below: CLICK HERE for the video & more Crazy Colette
AN URBAN ALTERNATIVE – Last weekend, I caught LaRon ambling into this acoustic pre-Grammy’s event, quiet and self-conscious, always nervous before he goes onstage, he’d tell me later. I got to witness the transformation as he played LA for the first time – and was blindsided by the texture of such a young voice and his musical range. I ended up at LaRon’s studio on Grammy Sunday to do some digging on this 23-year-old ‘Urban Alternative’ artist from Minneapolis who’s said that music gives him wings.
HEAR THIS - Donnie Scantz & Jahi Sundance just released LaRon’s lush debut album, Like a Rose, on itunes over Christmas as the first artist on their State of Emergencylabel. (They’re the Grammy winning production company who’ve produced music for the likes of Chris Brown, Ludacris, Usher, Aaliyah, Miguel and Danity Kane). LaRon’s music is about the whole approach and not one specific sound and his taste ranges from Rick Brown to MGMT, from Passion Pit to Coldplay. The album is a love story about a break-up (his ex’s name is Rose, hence the title) and the 10 tracks are peppered with stacked vocals, infusing layered and experimental sounds. His first single, Take You There, fuses Electro, Pop and Dubstep and you can STREAM IT via the Video below. [Go inside his studio after the jump]
