British host Louise Roe is on the go with some big news lately: (1) She just got engaged to this model (2) She’s hosting NBC’s Fashion Star and (3) STYLE Network just announced a few hours ago that she’ll be co-hosting the upcoming Pop Style, their first live series, covering all things fashion, beauty, lifestyle and pop culture.
Below, Louise shares her style tips and favorite things for Spring. I worked with Louise when she first moved to Los Angeles and she is truly lovely and unstoppable. Her outfit details are also below and take note of the Stephanie Oversized Clutch (that can fit a laptop) and the Juliette Nude Platforms she designed for The Louise Roe Collection, launched last October. (I’m now obsessed with these orange/blue shoes in the same style).
Q&A — Me: Care to share any of your favorite online trends and what you’re into for Spring?
Louise Roe: “My fave new online trends are searching for specific items on Polyvore and getting my specific item as soon as it goes on sale by using Hukkster. Actual pieces, I’m lusting after Express‘ new spring pistachio jeans and acid yellow crochet skater minidress.” Louise also told me she can’t wait to experiment with Maybelline’s new 90′s fluoro lip and eye colors and mentioned, “Spring is all about being bright and bold for me.”
Thanks for sharing the style tips and congrats, Louise!
Over the Rainbow – I spotted Angela Pham’s dress outside Milk Studios and went a bit bananas. You can get a closer look at the saturated striped dress in the VIDEO below. I’ve spotted Bravo’s Gallery Girl around Williamsburg a few times and her outfits never disappoint. I just had to know where she found this get up and she shared, “I bought the dress on eBay and get most of my finds on eBay. Lots of obsessive hours spent trawling eBay.” I also asked if she had any favorite vintage stores. She said she’s only been there once, but that Douglas Gardens in Miami was a recent find.
Secret Smile – I spotted former French VOGUE editrixCarine Roitfeld heading into Derek Lam at New York Fashion Week, just a month before her new position as Harper’s Bazaar Global Fashion Director was announced. It’s a new, ambiguous title, so I’ll be interested to see how her influence translates.
Otherwise, somuchwasmade of her ducking into tony NYC hotel The Mark during hurricane Sandy, mainly because another well-known VOGUE editrix was taking refuge there, too. Anway, I love that she went a little va va voom with the jumpsuit zipper and have some fun shots of her gold necklaces swinging in stride. [You can catch a bonus shot on my Instagram.]
Meet, um, Kumaré – Filmmaker Vikram Gandhi punk’d fashion for the sake of a mockumentary in the vein of Borat. The faux guru’s film, Kumaré, is about to be released on June 20th. The New York Times just reported that the man who initially set out to make a documentary on yoga created the Kumaré character as he began to question the credibility of gurus. His character ultimately punk’d fashion and I was there.
I spotted him at New York Fashion Week last September (for a post on modern men) as he spilled out of Lincoln Center following a late afternoon fashion show. I thought it was weird that he took this stance that felt like a deliberate pose here, then seemed resistant when [Continued...]
I got another shot in The New York Times in this slideshow featuring sunglasses. Here’s my original post with Clementine’s sawed-off sunglasses in Soho, plus the shopping details. I’ve had a few other shots land in the Times and catching shots of Dustin and Josh on the Fashion & Style home page was pretty fun. Ok, off my soapbox and back to working on some special posts.
Something’s Happening Here – GRAYMARKET is a conceptual retail space opening in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and something I alluded to after spotting one of the founders, Wei Du.
StyleSpotting – The common theme at last night’s private launch party was body art and I wanted to share a few of the tattoos I spotted outside the Wythe Studios space. (At the top, I thought the way she exposed her ink a bit more by skipping the top button of her dress was inspired.) It wasn’t a media event, so let’s leave it to the fancy purveyors for future photos and the skinny on their concept, but I can tell you to expect some pretty luxe labels juxtaposed with their keen discoveries. You can start here to get in the loop on this appointment only space.
Fun News - I woke up around my birthday to an email from Vogue Turkey wanting to use my shot of Issey Miyake’s BaoBao bag that I had spotted (ok, stalked) on Loren in Soho. (It’s the midnight blue bag at the top.) I spent a few of my formative childhood years in Turkey, which makes it even more heartwarming to have been included. Thank you, Vogue Türkiye!
Above the Fold – I logged on to my computer today to find one of my images as the top shot of the New York Times Fashion & Style page (my home page). My shot of Dustin was featured as the lead slide for a Bomber & Varsity Jacket Slideshow! Granted, it’s for user submission images, but still – it was the dominant photo above the proverbial fold, with a byline okaaaay. Even better, I also landed two other shots in the actual slideshow, which I didn’t realize until a couple hours ago. My slides are #3, #8 (featuring a fuller shot of Dustin, seen below) and #19 (featuring Ece Sukan, Editor at Large, Vogue Turkey). The image will stay up, but in a smaller format through Sunday.
It was a small victory because I literally chased Dustin down in Soho for this shot over the weekend on W. Broadway near Houston. He was already half a block away when I spotted him in this atypical varsity jacket, ears firmly cupped by his Beats by Dre. Ok, time to meet our style star.
Dustin’s Street Style
Dustin is an NYU sophomore studying Film & Television Production and was listening to Speaking in Tongues by Eagles of Death Metal when I stopped him. He says he stole this Zara varsity jacket from his brother Liam (shhh, our secret). He’s also wearing a Lucky Brand T-shirt, Levi’s and these cool Premium Linen Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars. [BTW, did you know you can customize your Converse kicks?] I get the impression that this guy from the ‘Bu takes care of his clothes.
If you’re curious, Dustin’s favorite bands are The Strokes, Radiohead, Gorillaz, Led Zeppelin and 60′s era band The Small Faces. He also just turned me on to Swoon, two 20-something NYC brothers The Noise Collective just referred to as crafting ethereal bedroom soul, mixing driving hip hop and house beats with otherworldly atmospherics. You can check out their song Break Your Heart below.
