StyleSpotting: A Dog with a Blog

by Jerri Howell on Thursday, March 25, 2010

in StreetStyle,Video

Coincidentally, after just posting shots of Kevin Jonas at Fred Segal, I ended up there for lunch where everyone was going nuts for Oscar, a purse size Yorkie. I sneaked a shot of his owner’s green toenails and found out the dog has a blog!

VIDEO: I’m back to minding my own business, but there’s a mini commotion after Oscar digs my card out of his owner’s purse, very determined to eat it. Kid’s a star!

StyleSpotting: How to Shoot Celebrities: When you live in LA, seeing celebrities is nearly an every day occurrence and usually not a big deal. On the rare occasion that you’d like to snap one for, oh say, a style website you’re launching, you’d be surprised how fast you grow a pair. I snapped Kevin Jonas for you!

I ate your heart at Fred Segal

Scenario: I was lollygagging at Fred Segal cafe when Kevin Jonas and his wife Danielle breezed through both cafes without any fanfare. (I was shocked that the paparazzi wasn’t lying in wait outside.) I had no intention of shooting them until I saw them posing for a couple people, so I thought I’d try asking, too – and they actually accommodated! I learned a few things that day, so here are some rules for shooting a celebrity:

StyleSpotting: Kevin Jonas.2

RULE 1: Just ask. See how excited they get about posing for a complete stranger. Yet again.

RULE 2: When they ask if you want to be in the shot, politely decline standing next to people this young and thin (and famous) or you’ll only end up feeling bad about yourself.

RULE 3: Get the money shot before they get nervous upon realizing that the tiny contraption in your hand has actually been shooting video (with rare shots of them together) this entire time.

RULE 4: Say bu-bye without expecting to be best friends. (Hey guys, callllll meeee!)

* Let it be said that Kevin and Danielle were truly among the nicest humans I’ve met and a sweet couple. Come back for more SHOOTING STARS thru the weekend! Next up, “My Movie with DREW BARRYMORE! Kind Of.

Umami @ Fred Segal, Santa Monica

Umami Burger Opens Soon! I know Umami Burger at Fred Segal in Santa Monica is expected to open any time now, but I’m nursing an addiction and couldn’t wait to find out what was unique to this location. Aside from literally pressing my nose to the glass, I tracked down Umami Burger’s Adam Fleischman who said to expect a more diverse menu and some exclusive, yet reasonable wines. Bottles will be under $35 and glasses under $10, with salads and organic options folded into the menu.

I’ll admit I was an Umami Burger late adopter and ended up there by mistake when I went to the Space 15 Twenty location expecting its predecessor, Snackbar. Not in burger mode, I took off with some cheese tater tots and was pretty blown away by the rich flavor. I made a point to try a famous burger a month later (shots below) and am now hooked. The term Umami refers to a Japanese philosophy that aside from the four standard tastes we experience (sweet, sour, salt, bitter), the actual chemical reaction that creates a savory experience is considered the fifth element.

Like I said, I pressed my nose against the glass. Do you want to peek inside with me?? Click here. I counted eleven tables, but there’s a lot more seating on the patio, pictured at the bottom. For BONUS MATERIAL, click here for a VIDEO of a stolen moment. I meet a friend at Umami at the Space 15 Twenty location and turn him on to the aforementioned cheese tater tots. My first Umami dining experience is evidenced below.

Diablo Burger –  The delicious burger has a mild hot sauce, light bleu cheese and a few fried onion strings. The burgers are served medium rare, unless otherwise requested.

Cheese Tater Tots – These aren’t always on the menu, but when I don’t see them, I ask and they sometimes have a batch cooked. If you get the tempura onion rings, try them with the roasted garlic aioli sauce.

Paper Placemats – For reasons I can’t understand, I’m hypnotized by their hand-stamped placemats. When I was a kid, stamping was a big thing I did with my sister and my Dad, so it’s a small, personalized detail I can still appreciate. Even better, the Santa Monica placemats will be red ink (which would resemble a certain celebrity’s mouth, don’t you think)?

Umami @ Fred Segal - The restaurant is on the corner of 5th & Broadway, with 11 tables inside and plenty of seating outside. Did you take a sneak peek inside yet?

Fred Segal is located at 500 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA 90401; (310) 451-1300; Hours will be 11am – midnight. Until the launch, try one of these locations. For their launch date, keep an eye on their tweets. If there’s not an UMAMI BURGER in your city, it’s safe to say it’s just a matter of time.  StyleSpotting.com □ Style has a story.
